Overview
A web site can be as basic as a few pages showcasing a business or as complex as a vast e-commerce site to sell products online and accept credit cards.

For anyone taking this step for the first time, the process can be daunting. There are many considerations, but sufficient planning will result in a site that is able change and expand along with the business.
Planning
During the planning phase you will register a domain name and plan what you want on your site. As any other project, the decisions you make at this point are critical to its success.

This is where you set your budget, set your objectives, decide on the structure of your site, choose a designer, and plan for expansion. It is important to allow plenty of time for this phase of the web project.
Development
During development, your web site will take shape. Based on your needs, your budget, and your overall objectives your web designer will plan, design, and construct all the pages and supporting scripting for your site.

The designer will use the ideas and base the structure of the site on the decisions you made in the planning phase.
Testing
During the testing phase, you will decide on a web host. Once the account is established, your web designer will upload the files to the server so you can see the site in action.

Any changes you would like can be made either while under development or during the test phase. When the testing is completed, you can advertise your site to clients and the public.
Maintenance
You will need to plan for the maintenance of the site. Links on your site may no longer be valid. Content may need to be edited. Products are added and deleted, prices change.

This is a necessary factor in any web site. How you handle this will be determined by the size of your company and your site.
Expansion
Web sites, like businesses, change and expand over time. What works one day is inadequate in a year or two. The initial planning pays huge dividends when the time comes to expand and change the web site.

Whether the expansion means a limited overhaul or a complete construction from the ground up is often determined by the foresight in the beginning.
